Cedar Grove

The Township of Cedar Grove is a quiet residential community of just under 13,000, located in the northeastern part of Essex County, and between the first and second chains of the Watchung Mountains. New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Cedar Grove as its 4th best place to live in Essex County and the 17th best place to live overall in its 2008 rankings.

This is a destination suburb, ideally located 15 miles west of New York City and 10 miles northwest of the City of Newark. Originally a small farming community, it boasts million dollar homes at the Park Ridge Estates, and several parks and recreational areas, including the lovely Mills Reservation, a wooded county park with trails for walking and an overlook of New York City.

The Cedar Grove School district, like the community, values high academic standards, with a progressive and nurturing motto,”Close enough to care, bold enough to dare.” The Township is centrally located within ten miles of Rutgers University-Newark, Seton Hall University and William Paterson University.

The family can glimpse life as it was in 1900 at the 14 acre Morgan farm and the Canfield-Morgan House Museum and Education Center, “Where the Past is Present.” The Cedar Grove Historical Society plans exciting events including an annual Pumpkin and Apple sale displaying tempting local fruits, and hand crafted jewelry at the Barn Sale.

Cedar Grove was once the premier spot for the smooth sounds of the big bands during the Big Band Era. Frank Dailey’s Meadowbrook Ballroom regularly hosting Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, and Glenn Miller and in 1936, broadcast the first nationally broadcast live radio program. The building still stands, used now by a local church as a social hall on Route 23, just off the Pompton Turnpike.
